The single biggest factor in refund speed is e-verification. Returns verified on the same day of filing get refunds 40% faster on average.
Why Refunds Get Delayed
- E-verification pending — CPC won't process until verified (30-day window)
- Mismatch with Form 26AS/AIS — TDS or income discrepancies trigger manual review
- Defective return notice (Section 139(9)) — Errors in the return that need correction
- Bank account not pre-validated — Refund can't be credited without validation
- High-value scrutiny — Returns claiming large deductions or refunds may be selected for scrutiny
How to Speed Up Your Refund
- E-verify immediately after filing — Don't wait for the 30-day window
- Pre-validate your bank account on the portal
- Cross-check AIS/TIS before filing to avoid mismatches
- Respond to any notice within 15 days
- File early in the season (July) for fastest processing
Checking Your Refund Status
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal → Dashboard → 'View Filed Returns' → Select the relevant AY → Check the status. If it shows 'Refund Issued', your bank should credit it within 4-5 business days. If it shows 'Processed' but no refund, there may be a demand or adjustment.
