Last-Minute Tax Saving Before March 31 — What Actually Works

Mar 31, 2026·5 min read

This guide is for old regime taxpayers. Under the new regime (default from FY 2023-24), most deductions are not available. If you're on the new regime, these don't apply.

Section 80C — Rs 1.5 Lakh Limit

Section 80D — Health Insurance

  • Self + family premium: Up to Rs 25,000 (Rs 50,000 if senior citizen)
  • Parents' premium: Additional Rs 25,000 (Rs 50,000 if parents are senior citizens)
  • Maximum total: Rs 1,00,000 (if both you and parents are 60+)
  • Preventive health check-up: Rs 5,000 included within the above limits

NPS — Extra Rs 50,000

Section 80CCD(1B) allows an additional Rs 50,000 deduction for NPS contributions over and above the Rs 1.5 lakh 80C limit. This is one of the most overlooked deductions. If you contribute Rs 2 lakh to NPS, Rs 1.5 lakh goes under 80C and Rs 50,000 under 80CCD(1B).

Quick Action Checklist

  1. Check if you've maxed Rs 1.5 lakh under 80C (EPF counts!)
  2. If not, invest the gap in ELSS (shortest lock-in) or PPF (zero risk)
  3. Invest Rs 50,000 in NPS for the extra 80CCD(1B) deduction
  4. Pay health insurance premium for yourself and parents before March 31
  5. Make any Section 80G donations before March 31 (50% or 100% deduction)
  6. Get all receipts and proofs ready for filing
